About the Species

Belonging to the rare genus Paraparatrechina, the newly discovered insect, named Paraparatrechina neela, is characterized by its distinctive blue coloration.

This marks the first addition to the Paraparatrechina genus from the Indian subcontinent in over a century, following the description of the sole previously known species, P. aseta, 121 years ago.

  • Description: Classified as a small ant with a body length of less than 2mm.
  • Appearance: Predominantly metallic blue body, with contrasting antennae, mandibles, and legs.
  • Head: Subtriangular shape with large eyes, featuring a triangular mandible with five teeth.
