About Post Office Act 2023
- Objective: Create a simple legislative framework for citizen-centric services, banking services, and Government scheme benefits at the last mile.
- Replaced: Indian Post Office Act (IPOA), 1898, enacted during Viceroy Lord Elgin-II’s tenure (1894-1899).
- Government Powers: Can intercept articles transmitted through India Post on grounds of security of the State, friendly relations with foreign states, public order, emergency, or public safety.
- Liability: Post office incurs limited liability, except as prescribed for specific services.
- Penalties: No penal provisions specified in the Act.
- Business Facilitation: Removes exclusive privileges for collecting, processing, and delivering letters to enhance ease of doing business and living.
- Director General of Postal Services (DGPS): Appointed to head India Post with powers to regulate charges, supply, and sale of postage stamps.
