About National Handloom Day:

  • Purpose: Celebrates and honors handloom weavers and aims to provide motivation and support to the handloom industry.
  • History:
    • Commemoration: The day commemorates the Swadeshi Movement, launched on 7th August 1905, which aimed to boycott British goods in favor of Indian-made products, including handloom textiles.
    • Inception: The first National Handloom Day was celebrated in 2015.
  • Significance:
    • Largest Cottage Industry: Handloom is India’s largest cottage industry and the second largest employment provider in rural areas.
    • Women Employment: 70% of weavers and allied workers in the handloom sector are women.
