Recent Developments:

  • Operational Projects:
    • Four projects in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh under NGM 2.0.
    • Capacity Addition: 145 Megaliters per day (MLD) of sewage treatment capacity.
    • Infrastructure Improvement: Enhanced sewer networks and interception of drains.

Overview of Namami Gange Mission (NGM) 2.0:

  • Background:
    • Launched in 2014, initially approved till March 2021.
    • Extended up to 31st March 2026 as NGM 2.0.
  • Objective:
    • Effective abatement of pollution and rejuvenation of the River Ganga.
  • Main Pillars:
    • Sewage treatment, river-front development, river surface cleaning, afforestation, biodiversity, public awareness, effluent management, and Ganga Gram.
  • Implementation:
    • Managed by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
    • NMCG: Registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
    • Fully central-funded initiative with no State-wise allocation.

Achievements:

  • Projects:
    • Total Projects: 457 taken up (as of Feb 2024).
    • Completed Projects: 280 completed and operational.
  • District Ganga Committees:
    • 139 District Ganga Committees constituted under the chairmanship of District Magistrates.
  • Effluent Treatment:
    • Sanctioning of Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) for industries.
