A. MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENTS

  1. Port Capacity and Performance:
    • Current capacity at major ports: 1,630 MTPA (doubled from 800.5 MTPA in 2014)
    • Total Indian Ports capacity (Major + Non-Major): 2690 MMTPA
    • Vision targets:
      • 2030: >3,500 MMTPA
      • 2047: 10,000 MMTPA
    • Cargo handling (Apr-Nov 2024): 549.47 million tonnes
      • 2.59% increase from previous year (535.61 MT)
    • 98 port modernization projects completed
      • Cost: Over ₹32,000 crores
      • Added capacity: 230 MTPA
  2. Major New Projects:

a) Vadhavan Port (Maharashtra)

    • Investment: ₹76,000 crore
    • Foundation laid by PM Modi
    • Significance: Major boost to Western region logistics

b) Tuticorin International Container Terminal (TICT)

    • Investment: ₹434 crore
    • Capacity: 6 lakh TEUs annually
    • Features: India’s first hydrogen hub port

c) National Maritime Heritage Complex (Lothal, Gujarat)

    • World-class maritime museum and cultural center
    • Focus: India’s maritime history and heritage

B. INTERNATIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS AND COOPERATION

  1. Global Rankings:
    • IMO Council Re-election: Highest votes (157/163)
    • World Bank’s LPI Report 2023:
      • Overall rank: 38th (up from 54th in 2014)
      • International Shipment: 22nd rank (up from 44th)
      • Container Dwell Time: 3 days (better than many developed nations)
    • CPPI 2023: 10 Indian ports in Global Top 100
      • Visakhapatnam Port: 19th rank (from 122nd)
  2. International Partnerships:

a) India-UAE Agreement:

    • Focus: India-Middle East Europe Economic Corridor
    • Sectors: Ports, Maritime, Logistics

b) Iran Partnership:

    • Long-term contract for Shahid Beheshti Port Terminal, Chabahar
    • Gateway for Central Asian trade

c) International Ferry Services:

    • India (Nagapattinam) – Sri Lanka (Kankesanthurai)

C. INLAND WATERWAYS DEVELOPMENT

  1. Cargo Movement:
    • Growth: 7x increase (18.1 MMT in FY14 to 133.03 MMT in FY24)
    • Current Progress (Apr-Nov 2024): 94.81 million tonnes
    • Year-on-year growth: 6.66%
  2. Key Initiatives: a) Cargo Promotion Scheme:
    • 35% incentive for inland waterways transport
    • Coverage: NW-1, NW-2, NW-16
    • Target: Divert 800 million tonne Km cargo

    b) River Cruise Development:

    • Total investment committed: ₹45,000 crore
    • Breakdown:
      • ₹35,000 crore for cruise vessels
      • ₹10,000 crore for terminal infrastructure

    c) Green Initiatives:

    • First hydrogen fuel cell vessel in Varanasi
    • ‘Harit Nauka’ guidelines launched
    • Target: 100% Green Vessels by 2047

D. EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENTS

  1. Port Operations:
    • Turn Around Time reduction: 94 hours (2013-14) to 48.06 hours (2023-24)
    • Ship berth-day output: 52% improvement since 2014-15
    • Cargo handling capacity: 87% improvement since 2014-15
  2. Digital Initiatives:
    • GeM procurement: ₹2,754.13 crore (170% higher than target)
    • Growth: 377% increase from 2022-23

E. NEW INITIATIVES AND MISSIONS

  1. Administrative Reforms:
    • 20+ Viksit Bharat Sankalp cells established
